Primetime Rumors: John Lithgow in Dumbledore Talks

by Lucas Feb 21,2025

HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety reports that a deal is imminent. This follows earlier speculation in November that Mark Rylance was a frontrunner for the part.

"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "We will only confirm casting details once agreements are finalized."

Lithgow's extensive filmography includes roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his remarkable range.

While casting remains largely confidential, reports suggest HBO is making significant strides. The search for the young leads—Harry, Hermione, and Ron—continues, alongside the already confirmed casting of Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, a decision possibly influenced by J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation aims for a faithful, yet more in-depth, portrayal of the beloved novels than the film series allowed. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (Succession), with Mylod also contributing writing experience from Game of Thrones.
