Rare 'Space World' GameCube Prototype Hits eBay for $100K

by Andrew Feb 22,2025

The Nintendo GameCube, despite being nearly 25 years old, boasts a dedicated fanbase eager to acquire its rarest iterations. Among the most elusive are the DVD-playing Panasonic Q and numerous themed variations, such as the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red edition. However, the pinnacle of rarity might be the Space World GameCube prototype.

Initially believed lost to time, this LED-equipped prototype, one of several showcased at Nintendo Space World 2000, recently resurfaced in 2023 at ConsoleVariations, thanks to Donny Fillerup.

Several key distinctions set the Space World GameCube apart from its retail counterpart. Most significantly, it lacks internal hardware, relying solely on LEDs to simulate operation. Physical differences include a semi-transparent black logo revealing the internal disc and modified vents. ConsoleVariations documents over 20 total variations from the original Japanese GameCube.

Now listed on eBay by Donny Fillerup for a remarkable $100,000, the Space World 2000 GameCube is intended to fund Fillerup's "gaming place," a venue designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Noteworthy is the absence of the prototype's unique controller from the sale.

This isn't Fillerup's first foray into high-value console sales. In 2022, he auctioned a Golden Wii, once a gift to the British Royal Family from THQ, for $36,000.

Therefore, a six-figure price tag for this historically significant prototype isn't entirely unreasonable. While the asking price is $100,000, Fillerup is open to offers, suggesting a potential for a lower sale price. For those with deep pockets, this rare piece of gaming history could be within reach.
