Robert Eggers to Write and Direct Labyrinth Sequel

by Oliver Feb 27,2025

Robert Eggers, acclaimed director of the gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to helm a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth.

According to Variety, Eggers will pen and direct this follow-up to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy adventure, starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. He'll collaborate on the script with Sjón, his writing partner on The Northman. While a sequel was previously in development with Scott Derrickson attached, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have opted for Eggers' vision.

PlayThe original Labyrinth, released in 1986, featured Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who abducts Connelly's baby brother. Connelly's character then embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical world, aided by a troupe of Henson's iconic puppets, to rescue her sibling.

This Labyrinth sequel isn't Eggers' only upcoming project. He's also directing a werewolf film titled Werwulf, slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England and will utilize Old English dialogue.

Eggers' Nosferatu, a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, premiered last Christmas. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a real estate agent whose trip to Transylvania to broker a deal with a mysterious count unleashes vampiric horrors upon him and his wife.

Nosferatu received four Academy Award nominations, including Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Read our review of Nosferatu here.
