Rumor: Sony Begins Development on New Live-Action Spider-Man Project

Sony's Spider-Man Universe is reportedly expanding with a new film featuring a live-action Miles Morales. While Marvel continues its own Spider-Man franchise, Sony is forging ahead with a project that could redefine its Spider-Man Universe (SSU).

Industry reports suggest Sony is actively seeking an actor to portray Miles Morales, a character who gained immense popularity in Sony's animated Spider-Man films. The success of these animated films, and the character's widespread appeal, makes a live-action Miles Morales adaptation almost inevitable. Producer Amy Pascal previously confirmed Sony's interest, and now it appears those plans are moving forward.

While the exact format – a standalone film or appearance in another SSU movie – remains unclear, speculation points towards the latter. Miles might be introduced in a currently unannounced Spider-Man film, or potentially in the rumored Spider-Gwen project. Although casting details are scarce, Jeff Sneider's comments on "The Hot Mic" podcast suggest Sony is actively searching for the perfect actor. Fan speculation naturally centers on Shameik Moore, the voice actor for Miles in the animated films, who has expressed interest in a live-action role. Hailee Steinfeld, the voice of Gwen Stacy, is another frequently mentioned possibility.

Sony's SSU has had mixed results. While the Venom films performed well, others like Madame Web and Morbius underperformed. A successful live-action Spider-Verse movie, particularly one centered on Miles Morales, could revitalize the franchise. However, concerns remain about Sony's ability to handle this beloved character in live-action, with some fans expressing a preference for Marvel's involvement. The success of this venture will hinge on Sony's creative choices and its ability to learn from past mistakes. The wait for further news and the eventual outcome will undoubtedly keep fans on the edge of their seats.
