Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Standalone Status

by Max May 05,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signify the character's "end." Despite the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine and Deadpool's clear desire to join the Avengers within the film, Reynolds believes that integrating Deadpool into these iconic teams would be too much of a "wish fulfillment" scenario.

The recent cast announcement for Avengers: Doomsday highlighted a strong presence of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops. This has led to speculation that Avengers: Doomsday might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie. However, Reynolds' name was absent from the list of confirmed stars, further distancing Deadpool from these teams.

Reynolds did, however, hint at the possibility of Deadpool making a surprise cameo in a supporting role, citing the positive fan reaction to Wesley Snipes' appearance as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. This suggests that while a formal membership in the Avengers or X-Men is off the table, Deadpool might still appear in future Marvel projects in a less central capacity.

Looking ahead, Reynolds mentioned he is currently writing a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. This could potentially be another Deadpool film that relies heavily on cameos, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Characters like Wesley Snipes' Blade, Channing Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23 could return.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, while the cast list has been revealed, plot details remain scarce. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, stating it would recapture the "old Marvel feeling." Other cast members like Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch have also shared their excitement. A leaked set photo sparked further speculation, with some fans interpreting it as a bad omen for the X-Men.

Rumors have circulated that Oscar Isaac might appear as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, especially after he withdrew from a recent Star Wars event due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the initial cast reveal was not exhaustive, hinting at more surprises to come.

With these developments, the future of Deadpool and the broader Marvel universe remains exciting and unpredictable.
