The 990 Pro succeeds the popular 980 Pro, delivering a significant speed upgrade. Samsung states it offers 50% better performance per watt compared to the previous 980 Pro model. It features impressive sequential read/write speeds of 7,450MB/s and 6,900MB/s, plus random speeds reaching 1400K/1550K IOPS. Unlike many competing SSDs, Samsung manufactures all components in-house. The 990 Pro uses the new Samsung Pascal controller and 7th-generation TLC NAND flash memory. It also includes a built-in DRAM cache, a feature often omitted in similarly priced drives—including Samsung’s own 990 Evo Plus—which typically rely on Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to reduce costs.
Is the Samsung 990 Pro Compatible with the PS5?
The Samsung 990 Pro is an excellent SSD choice for the PS5. While its performance exceeds what the PS5's internal hardware can fully utilize, it remains a cost-effective option, often priced lower than many slower alternatives. Sony advises using a heatsink with your SSD, and this version of the 990 Pro comes with a slim, all-metal heatsink that fits perfectly inside the PS5’s SSD bay.
The SK Hynix Platinum P41 SSD is just as fast and also on sale

Amazon has also reduced the price of the 2TB SK Hynix P41 Platinum PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid state drive to just $129.99 with free shipping. That’s $20 less than the Samsung 990 Pro, and it offers comparable real-world performance along with a DRAM cache. Although SK Hynix may be less familiar to consumers than Samsung or Western Digital, they are a major force in the flash memory industry. As a leading South Korean DRAM manufacturer and one of the world’s top semiconductor firms, SK Hynix supplies memory components for well-known brands such as Corsair and G.Skill.
