Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot

by Nicholas Apr 24,2025

It appears that Buffy the Vampire Slayer might be making a comeback on Hulu. According to Variety, a reboot of the iconic series is nearing realization, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in negotiations to return as the beloved vampire-slaying protagonist, albeit as a recurring character. The new series will focus on a different Slayer, bringing fresh perspectives to the Buffyverse.

Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, acclaimed for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in discussions to direct and executive produce this reboot. The writing and showrunning duties will be handled by Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in this new project, following past allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the production of the original series and its spinoff, Angel.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy Summers. The original series followed Buffy, a high school student chosen to fight against vampires, demons, and other supernatural forces, supported by her loyal friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and her Watcher, Rupert Giles.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. It also spawned a spinoff, Angel, and was later continued through a series of canonical comic books. Fans of the original series are eagerly anticipating how this reboot will honor the legacy while introducing new narratives and characters.
