Scarlett Johansson Criticizes Oscars Over Avengers Snub

by Matthew Jan 07,2026

Academy Award-nominated actress Scarlett Johansson remains perplexed about why Avengers: Endgame - where she starred as Black Widow - received only one Oscar nomination for visual effects despite its monumental success.

"How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?" Johansson questioned during her recent Vanity Fair interview about the 2019 Marvel blockbuster. "It achieved the impossible - making an incredibly complex film that not only worked cinematically but became one of the highest-grossing movies ever made."

While widely regarded as one of Marvel Studios' finest achievements, the Academy has historically overlooked superhero films for major categories. Only 2018's Black Panther broke this pattern with a Best Picture nomination. Johansson's decade-long portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, from Iron Man 2 (2010) to Endgame, arguably deserved recognition.

The actress revealed she likely won't revisit the MCU: "I struggle to imagine circumstances where returning would serve my character's arc," she explained. "While I cherish my colleagues and our work together, Natasha's story reached its natural conclusion."

"I deeply miss my Marvel family," Johansson continued, "but maintaining narrative integrity matters - both for the character and for fans who deserve satisfying storytelling."

Following Black Widow's Endgame sacrifice, Johansson reprised the role for 2021's prequel Black Widow, marking her first executive producer credit in the franchise.
