Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Hints

by Julian May 15,2025

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. The project's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the film might be ready sooner than expected. "I am [excited] too," Tropper said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that the film will take place in the future, specifically "post-[the first] nine," and possibly five or six years after the events of Episode IX. This makes Levy's film the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era, offering a fresh narrative in the Star Wars universe.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Kennedy also clarified that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she stated. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, adding to the anticipation.

With Tropper's optimistic words, it seems that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

It's worth noting that Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Moreover, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, continuing her journey post-Rise of Skywalker. Despite some changes, including the departure of screenwriter Steven Knight, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars slate is expanding even further. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga as initially rumored.

The next Star Wars content to grace our screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising more thrilling adventures in the Star Wars universe.
