The fervor among Hollow Knight enthusiasts reignited following a series of posts by one of the game's creators, William Pellen, on Twitter (X), right before and during the Switch 2 reveal on January 16, 2025. On January 15, Pellen tantalized fans with a post stating "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow," seemingly alluding to the anticipated Switch 2 announcement. Naturally, this sparked discussions about Silksong's release.

The speculation escalated when, on the day of the Switch 2 reveal, Pellen updated his profile picture to a slice of cake. A reverse image search revealed that the image was from a Bon Appetit article about the Brooklyn Blackout Cake, published on April 2, 2024. Pellen's engagement with this article, commenting "mmmm tasty," further fueled the community's speculation. Fans dissected the comments, with one fan boldly promising to bake the cake if Silksong news was announced by April 2, 2025, and another linking the cake's "silky texture" to the game and the upcoming Nintendo Direct.

While there's no definitive proof that Pellen himself left the comment on the cake recipe, his choice of profile picture and timing of the posts undeniably stirred the community. However, it's crucial to note that these could be red herrings, as Pellen might simply be having fun with the fans.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Official Announcement Five Years Ago

Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced on February 14, 2019, promising to be a thrilling sequel to the beloved Hollow Knight. The game, set in a new kingdom ruled by silk and song, follows the adventures of Hornet and was slated for release across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

In December 2019, Team Cherry offered a glimpse into the game's enchanting soundtrack, composed by Christopher Larkin. However, after this, the development team went quiet for over two years.

The silence was broken in February 2022 when Pellen reassured fans that the project was still on track, promising more updates as the release date approached. Later that year, in June, Team Cherry unveiled a new trailer during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, featuring fresh gameplay and confirming that Silksong would be available on Game Pass upon launch.

Originally expected to launch in 2023, Team Cherry's Matthew Griffin announced a delay in May of that year, stating, "We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing. We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."
