Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Cease-and-Desist Order

by Sarah Jul 15,2025

Smash Together, a niche dating app designed for passionate *Super Smash Bros.* players to connect and interact, has reportedly received a cease-and-desist letter just hours before its scheduled open beta launch. The app was set to go live on May 15, following months of development and anticipation within the gaming community.

On May 13, the official Smash Together Twitter account posted a somber Yoshi meme with the caption: “We got cease and desisted.” While the message did not name the sender, many speculate that it came from Nintendo, given the game's intellectual property ties to the company.

Smash Together marketed itself as the "premium dating platform for Super Smash Bros. fans of all kinds," promising users the chance to find their ideal in-game partner—or even a real-life connection—with a matchmaking system tailored to player preferences. Screenshots released by the team showed features like listing your main character, notable tournament wins, and prompts such as “I’m looking for… Someone who can make it out of pools at a major.”

While the concept was clearly built for fun and community engagement, it likely raised red flags regarding intellectual property concerns. Whether intentional or not, using *Smash Bros.* branding and mechanics as the core foundation of a dating service probably attracted legal scrutiny faster than expected.

As of now, there’s no official update from the Smash Together team about potential next steps or whether they plan to rebrand or pivot the idea into a more legally viable direction. Until then, we’ll refrain from making any jokes involving the word “smashing”—you’re welcome.
