Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

by David Feb 28,2025

Sony's popular limited-time PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 PS5 console themes are disappearing soon. A tweet from Sony confirmed these nostalgic themes will be unavailable starting February 1st, 2025. The positive reception, however, means they'll be returning in the coming months.

"We appreciate the overwhelmingly positive response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 console themes, which are being removed tomorrow," stated Sony. "Given this success, we're working to bring these special designs back in the future."

Despite this good news, Sony also announced there are no plans for additional themes beyond these four retro designs.

"While we're not currently developing new themes, we're thrilled to continue celebrating PlayStation's history with you," Sony added in a subsequent tweet.

This announcement disappointed many fans, as the PS5 notably lacked themes at launch, a feature present in previous PlayStation consoles. This statement suggests that won't change for this console generation.

These anniversary themes, released to mark PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3rd, 2024, allowed PS5 users to customize their consoles with visuals and sounds from past PlayStation systems. The PS1 theme featured the original console's image, the PS2 its menu design, the PS3 its wave background, and the PS4 its signature wave patterns. Each theme also incorporated the respective console's iconic startup sounds.
