Spectre Divide Backlash Prompts Skin Prices to Lower Soon After Launch
Mountaintop Studios, developers of the newly released FPS title Spectre Divide, swiftly addressed player concerns regarding exorbitant skin and bundle pricing. Just hours after launch, the studio announced significant price reductions and refunds.
Price Cuts and Refunds
Following considerable player backlash, Spectre Divide implemented a 17-25% price reduction across all in-game weapons and character skins, as confirmed by game director Lee Horn. The studio acknowledged player feedback, stating, "We've heard your feedback and we're making changes." To compensate players who purchased items at the original higher prices, Mountaintop Studios is issuing a 30% SP (in-game currency) refund, rounded up to the nearest 100 SP.
This refund applies to all purchases made before the price adjustment. However, the studio clarified that the Starter Pack, Sponsors, and Endorsement upgrades will retain their original prices. Players who purchased the Founder's Pack or Supporter Pack and subsequently bought these items will receive the additional SP refund as well.
Mixed Reactions and Future Outlook
While some players welcomed the price adjustments, the response remains mixed, mirroring the game's current "Mixed" rating on Steam (49% Negative at the time of writing). Negative reviews flooded Steam following the initial pricing controversy. Social media reactions were equally diverse, with some players praising the developer's responsiveness while others remain critical, questioning the timing of the changes and expressing concerns about the game's long-term viability in a competitive free-to-play market. Suggestions for further improvements, such as the ability to purchase individual items from bundles, have also been raised. The future success of Spectre Divide will depend heavily on Mountaintop Studios' continued engagement with player feedback and their ability to address ongoing concerns.
