Set to launch on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man will be the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic's Universes Beyond series, following the Final Fantasy set, and the third overall after the Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set in 2023. Unlike what you might expect, this set won't feature preconstructed Commander decks. Instead, **the cards in the Scene Box shown above** are designed specifically for Commander play and **won't** be Standard-legal.
While Magic first dipped its toes into the Marvel universe with a Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and more last year, the Spider-Man set marks the first full set inspired by the iconic comics. According to Max McCall, Executive Producer at Wizards of the Coast, this comprehensive approach was necessary to fully capture the essence of Spider-Man and his vast array of villains.
"Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall explains. "If we had tried to fit Spider-Man into a broader set, many important characters like Aunt May would have been left out. A dedicated set allows us to include characters like Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales, alongside lesser-known but equally important figures."
McCall also highlighted how designing for a Universes Beyond set "flips the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike typical Magic sets, where cards must establish the setting and be engaging to play, Universes Beyond sets can leverage existing fan familiarity. "When we make a card that speaks to great power bearing great responsibility, there’s room to add mechanical complexity because fans already understand the story the card is telling," McCall noted.
Head Designer Mark Rosewater elaborated on how they integrate the world of Spider-Man into Magic’s gameplay, using the game's color pie to represent heroism and villainy across all colors. For instance, Spider-Man's sense of duty aligns with the white color pie, his scientific background fits blue, and his connection to spiders and nature resonates with green.
"Spider-Man feeling obligated to use his power to help people is core to him being part of the white color pie. His scientific origin, stemming from a radioactive spider bite, and his inventions like the web-slingers, are distinctly blue. Finally, his powers being animal-based and his destined connection to spiders and the Spider-Man universe are all core green," Rosewater explained.
The Spider-Man set will include the usual array of products: Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all showcased in the gallery above. Although there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the set will reintroduce Welcome Decks—introductory decks designed for new players, typically distributed for free by game stores to provide a gentle entry into the game.
Alongside this year’s Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced a set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Additionally, two more in-universe sets are on the horizon: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
