Splatoon 3 Updates Ending Fuels Splatoon 4 Speculation

Nintendo's announcement of ending regular updates for Splatoon 3 has reignited speculation about a potential Splatoon 4. While the game isn't entirely abandoned – holiday events and necessary updates will continue – the news has fans buzzing.

The End of an Era for Splatoon 3

Nintendo confirmed that regular content updates for Splatoon 3 are concluding. However, festive events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will return, along with ongoing monthly challenges and balance patches as needed. The official Twitter (X) announcement stated: "After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close. Don't worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being."

This announcement follows the September 16th Grand Festival, Splatoon 3's final major Splatfest event. Nintendo released a commemorative video showcasing past Splatfests and the Deep Cut's Grand Festival performance. The company expressed gratitude to fans, stating, "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us, it's been a blast!"

The Speculation Begins: Splatoon 4 on the Horizon?

With the cessation of active development on Splatoon 3, rumors of a sequel, Splatoon 4, are intensifying. Fans have pointed to potential easter eggs or clues within the Grand Festival event, suggesting a new city setting for the next installment. While some dismiss these as coincidences, others believe they hint at Inkopolis's successor.

Although no official announcements have been made regarding Splatoon 4, reports earlier this year suggested Nintendo had begun development on a new Splatoon title for the Switch. The Grand Festival's significance as Splatoon 3's final large Splatfest fuels the anticipation, echoing the pattern established by previous Final Fests' influence on subsequent sequels. The potential "Past, Present, or Future" theme for Splatoon 4 is also being discussed.

For now, the gaming community awaits official confirmation from Nintendo regarding the future of the Splatoon franchise.
