Splitgate 2: Halo-Portal Shooter Sequel Announced

1047 Games, the creators of the popular multiplayer FPS Splitgate, are back with a sequel! Get ready to dive into the Sol Splitgate League.

Familiar, Yet Fresh

On July 18th, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic trailer for *Splitgate 2*, the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2019 hit. CEO Ian Proulx explained their vision: to create "a game that can last a decade or more." While the original drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team recognized the need for "tools to build a deep and satisfying gameplay loop" to ensure longevity in the modern gaming landscape.

Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, added, "We rethought our approach to portals, aiming to create a system where skilled players could truly excel, without making portaling essential for victory."

While specifics on gameplay remain under wraps, the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 will be built using Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a "faction system." They promise a fresh experience, stating, "Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely different from the original." The game is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Often described as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is a PvP arena shooter where players strategically use wormholes to navigate maps. The original game exploded in popularity after a demo garnered 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its success led to server upgrades to handle the massive influx of players. After a period in early access, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, with the announcement that development would cease to focus on building "the game fans deserve"—Splitgate 2.

New Characters, Maps, and Factions

The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions, promising "more depth to the gameplay experience." According to the Steam page, these factions—Aeros, Meridian, and Sabrask—offer unique playstyles: speed, tactical time manipulation, and raw power, respectively. While details remain scarce, the developers clarified that Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.

Gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21st-25th), but the trailer has already generated considerable excitement. The developers assure fans the trailer accurately reflects the game, highlighting real maps, weapons, portal effects, and the return of dual-wielding.

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to delve into the game's lore through comics, earn character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
