Square Enix to Launch Octopath Traveler 0 for Switch & Switch 2

by Ethan May 05,2026

A new chapter in the Octopath Traveler saga arrives on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, unveiled during today's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase. The groundbreaking prequel, Octopath Traveler 0, launches worldwide December 4, 2025.

Breaking series tradition, players will craft their own protagonist in Octopath Traveler 0 before embarking on a "journey of restoration" after the tragic destruction of Wishvale, their hometown. The debut trailer showcases the franchise's signature HD-2D art style alongside exciting new mechanics including town reconstruction where players design and position buildings.

Square Enix confirms over 30 recruitable companions will join your party, while maintaining the beloved Break & Boost combat system. Though drawing inspiration from 2020's mobile prequel Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, developers emphasize this is a completely reimagined experience with fully voiced dialogue, deeper character arcs, and expanded narrative content.

"The '0' in our title represents the beginning of your personal adventure," explains producer Hirohito Suzuki. "We've created a welcoming entry point for newcomers while offering fresh dimensions for series veterans through original storytelling and gameplay innovations."

The original Octopath Traveler debuted exclusively on Nintendo Switch in 2018 before multiplatform releases, with its sequel following in 2023. The Nintendo Direct also revealed another HD-2D project, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, presenting as an original action RPG experience.
