How Star Wars: Legacy of Vader Fleshes Out Kylo Ren's Lost Year

Marvel's Star Wars comics are entering a new phase. Previously focusing on the year between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Marvel is now expanding its storytelling to other points in the Star Wars timeline. Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku covers the final clash between the Rebellion and the Empire, while Star Wars: Jedi Knights explores the Jedi Order before The Phantom Menace. However, Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, a new series, promises the most intriguing development, delving deep into the character of Kylo Ren.

IGN recently interviewed Charles Soule, the writer of Legacy of Vader, to discuss the series and its impact on Ben Solo's portrayal. Below is an exclusive preview:

Kylo Ren's Continued Journey

Soule, known for his work on the post-Empire Strikes Back era, including the flagship Star Wars series and crossovers like War of the Bounty Hunters and Dark Droids, explains his return to Kylo Ren: He felt there was more to explore after his 2020 miniseries, The Rise of Kylo Ren. The films only partially reveal Kylo's story, leaving much to the imagination. This new series, set after Episode VIII, will tackle the character's rapid transformation and intense emotional state. Soule also reunited with artist Luke Ross, previously collaborating on War of the Bounty Hunters and Dark Droids.

Ben Solo After The Last Jedi

Legacy of Vader begins immediately after The Last Jedi, a pivotal moment for Ben Solo. He's failed to sway Rey, battled Luke, nearly killed his mother, and now commands the First Order. The series focuses on his inner turmoil as he grapples with his past. Soule notes that Ben's inner conflict is significant, and his visit to Darth Vader's fortress on Mustafar is a key element of the story. Ben's conflicted feelings toward his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker, will be explored. Soule highlights Ben's self-deception, his grand pronouncements masking his inner turmoil and search for guidance.

The First Order's internal politics will also play a significant role, featuring characters like General Hux and Allegiant General Pryde. Kylo Ren's efforts to consolidate power will be central to the narrative.

Legacy of Vader aims to enrich our understanding of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, adding depth to the Sequel Trilogy villain. While the outcome is known, the series will provide insights into Ben Solo's motivations and choices in The Rise of Skywalker. Soule emphasizes that the story can be enjoyed both by long-time fans and newcomers, balancing personal struggles with action-packed sequences.
