New Star Wars Series Dives into New Republic Era
Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its flagship Star Wars series in May 2025, taking fans on a thrilling journey set after the Battle of Jakku and the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This new series follows the iconic trio—Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa—as they work tirelessly to establish the New Republic and restore order to a galaxy still reeling from conflict.
The latest volume is penned by Alex Segura, who previously brought us the gripping Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku miniseries. The series will be brought to life by the artistic talents of Star Wars veteran Phil Noto, known for his work on Star Wars: Poe Dameron. Both Noto and Leinil Yu will contribute to the captivating covers of the first issue.
Set roughly two years after the events of Return of the Jedi, Segura and Noto's Star Wars captures a hopeful new era. The New Republic is on a mission to assert itself as the galaxy's new ruling force. However, Luke and his friends face new challenges as opportunistic pirates, thieves, and other villains exploit the power vacuum left by the Empire's defeat.
“Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking,” Segura shared with StarWars.com. “These stories will be packed with action and the character moments Star Wars fans have come to expect, featuring twists on the galaxy and landscape we know, with an eye toward making sure people can jump in easily and with any issue. We can't wait."
“Alex is an amazing writer and has come up with some great storylines and new characters for this series and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to bring them to life on the page! It’s also been exciting to draw the classic characters in the post-Return of the Jedi era because there’s no existing film or TV versions of them,” Noto added. “I get to create new looks for them while also having reference of the actors from the 80s to help sell the look of this timeline.”
Star Wars #1 is slated for release on May 7, 2025, perfectly timed to coincide with this year's Star Wars Day celebrations.
This isn't the only new Star Wars comic Marvel has in store. In February, the publisher will launch Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, delving into Kylo Ren's journey following the events of The Last Jedi.
