Stephen King's Cujo Will Be Reimagined In New Netflix Adaptation

by Christian May 15,2025

In the latest "here comes a new remake" news—or, if you're a bit more optimistic, "here comes another Stephen King movie" news—a brand new adaptation of *Cujo* is about to bare its teeth. Netflix is set to produce a new film version of King's chilling story, according to Deadline, and has attached Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee to helm the project. However, things are still in their puppy days, as no writers, directors, or cast members have been announced yet.

Stephen King's novel *Cujo* was originally published in 1981 and quickly adapted into a cult classic horror movie in 1983 by screenwriters Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, directed by Lewis Teague. The story follows a dedicated mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who will stop at nothing to protect her young son from a rabid dog. The duo finds themselves trapped in a car with a dead engine, fighting for survival as Cujo, once a sweet pet now turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat, stalks them relentlessly from outside. The intense situation is compounded by the threat of heatstroke.

*Cujo* is just one of many beloved Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the big screen over the years. Recently, there's been a resurgence of King adaptations. Oz Perkins' version of King's short story *The Monkey* was released in February, and fans can look forward to the Glen Powell-led adaptation of *The Running Man* and JT Mollner's take on *The Long Walk* (also produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo) later this year. Additionally, the *IT* prequel series *Welcome to Derry* is slated to premiere on HBO, and *Carrie*, another Stephen King classic turned horror icon, is being developed into an eight-episode series on Prime Video by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King fans have been treated to a feast of adaptations lately, and with the new *Cujo* remake on the horizon, there's even more gourmet horror on its way.
