"Street Fighter Movie Taps New Director"
A new Street Fighter movie has selected its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurd comedy show The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm the new film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom is said to be "deeply involved" with the project, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.
This upcoming film marks another attempt to bring the iconic Street Fighter franchise to the big screen. Fans of the series might fondly remember the 1994 movie, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Despite mixed reviews at the time, it has since gained a cult following. While casting details are yet to be announced, fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters on the big screen. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors behind Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests that Legendary Entertainment might be aiming for a more absurdist take on the franchise, which could be exciting for fans who appreciate the more cartoonish elements of Street Fighter.
In the meantime, gamers can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as its newest fighter. For more details, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review here.
