Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals
The Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster project spanned five years, a testament to the developers' dedication to crafting a remaster that remains true to the beloved classics. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the team behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) shared their journey in creating a high-quality remaster.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays, pushing the release to this year. "As we approached the end of development, we realized the necessity for further review," Sakiyama stated.
Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi elaborated on their approach, saying, "We started by understanding the situation thoroughly. After discussions with Sakiyama about the quality standards, it was evident that many aspects required further refinement."
Reviving the Series
The remaster is not merely a standalone project but a crucial first step in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Producer Rui Naito emphasized the importance of this initial effort, stating, "This remaster is the foundation for reviving the Suikoden IP. We couldn't afford to falter here. The directive was clear: 'make it solid.'" Naito further stressed the importance of quality, noting, "If we released a substandard product at the outset, it could jeopardize the entire revival effort."
