Switch 2 Price: Nintendo Considers Consumer Expectations

by Gabriella Apr 05,2025

Nintendo is meticulously considering several factors as it deliberates on the pricing strategy for the upcoming Switch 2. While analysts have speculated to IGN that the console might launch at $400 later this year, Nintendo has yet to confirm any pricing details for this next-generation console.

In a recent investor-focused Q&A session, Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, addressed the complexities of setting a price for the Switch 2. He highlighted the impact of inflation and the significant shifts in exchange rates since the original Nintendo Switch was introduced in 2017. Furukawa emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, taking into account not only economic factors but also the price expectations of consumers for Nintendo products.

"We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017," Furukawa stated. "We also need to consider the price range that consumers expect for Nintendo products. We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account."

The original Nintendo Switch debuted at $299.99 and has maintained that price point for years. With competitors like Sony and Microsoft having recently increased the prices of their current-generation consoles due to rising costs, inflation, and currency fluctuations, the question arises: what price range do consumers now expect from Nintendo?

Analysts suggest that the Switch 2 could be priced at $400, a step up from the original Switch's launch price. This speculation seems reasonable, considering the Switch 2 is expected to be a more advanced and powerful console than its predecessor. The current lineup includes the Nintendo Switch OLED model at $350 and the Nintendo Switch Lite at $200.

Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, where they will provide a more detailed look at the console following its initial reveal last month. The reveal showcased the Switch 2's form factor, hinted at a new Mario Kart game, and introduced a potential 'mouse' mode for the new Joy-Con controllers.

Despite the excitement, many questions about the Switch 2 remain unanswered, including the function of a new Joy-Con button, the console's power capabilities, and the purpose of its new ports. Nintendo plans to address these queries through Switch 2 hands-on events in various cities worldwide.

In the meantime, Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo has no plans to adjust the price of the original Switch, even with the Switch 2's launch on the horizon, indicating stability in the pricing of the current model.
