Thunderbolts Trailer Debate: Taskmaster's Removal from Key Scene Sparks Controversy

by Gabriella Apr 26,2025

A new teaser for *Thunderbolts* has ignited a fervent debate among fans regarding the fate of Taskmaster, following the noticeable omission of the character from a key scene. The original trailer from September 2024 showcased Taskmaster standing between Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene. However, the latest teaser depicts the same scene without Taskmaster, prompting speculation about the character's destiny.

What happened to Taskmaster?

This change, coupled with the absence of Taskmaster actress Olga Kurylenko from the recently announced cast of *Avengers: Doomsday*—while other *Thunderbolts* characters were included—has led many MCU enthusiasts to speculate that Taskmaster may not survive the movie. The question on everyone's mind is: why include Taskmaster in the initial trailer scene only to remove the character in the subsequent teaser?

Fans have come up with numerous theories, ranging from Marvel attempting to mislead audiences to adjusting their narrative strategy for *Avengers: Doomsday*. Additionally, slight differences in character positioning between the two scenes have fueled further speculation. Could Sentry, known for his ability to 'delete' people, have already eliminated Taskmaster at this point? Or might Taskmaster have turned against the team? The MCU community is rife with uncertainty about what this means for Taskmaster's future.

"Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie," remarked redditor Matapple13. "Yesterday they announced Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman in the *Avengers: Doomsday* cast, but Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress) was blatantly absent, and now, Marvel posts this..."

Conversely, some fans believe this could be a misdirection. "The amount of people saying she’s dying and Marvel seemingly leaning into that by barely showing her make me think there's a reveal there with her in the movie and that she lives," suggested puckallday.

What we do know is that Sentry is incredibly powerful. The teaser begins with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, describing Sentry as "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one." This suggests that Taskmaster could have been easily eliminated or sent to another dimension by Sentry's sheer might.

The MCU has been buzzing with activity this week, including discussions on whether Marvel's *Avengers: Doomsday* cast announcement has inadvertently spoiled elements of *Thunderbolts*. Moreover, both Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted that the *Avengers: Doomsday* cast list is not yet complete, leaving room for hope that Taskmaster might still play a role in future MCU projects.

The wait won't be long. *Thunderbolts* is slated for release in May 2025, followed by the TV show *Ironheart* in June, and the kickoff of Phase 6 with *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* in July. *Avengers: Doomsday* is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, with *Secret Wars* arriving a year later in May 2027.
