Joseph Kosinski is reportedly set to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy is on board to pen the script, building on an initial draft from Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy, who has recently been engaged in writing multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor—created by his brother, Tony—brings a fresh perspective to the project.

Miami Vice, a landmark NBC police series created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. The show, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Miami detectives Crockett and Tubbs, is celebrated for revolutionizing television with its unique visual and auditory style.

The series was previously adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), and starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

PlayDetails about the new film are scarce at this point. It's clear, however, that Miami Vice will not be the next project for the director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, as Joseph Kosinski focuses on his upcoming release, F1, set to premiere this June.

This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to immerse himself in the vibrant world of Miami Vice, ensuring he captures the essence of the iconic series in his new film.
