Trump: Chinese AI DeepSeek a 'Wake-Up Call' for U.S. Tech After Nvidia's $600B Loss

Donald Trump has highlighted the new Chinese artificial intelligence model, DeepSeek, as a "wake-up call" for the U.S. tech industry, following a significant $600 billion drop in Nvidia's market value. The launch of DeepSeek triggered a sharp decline in stocks for companies deeply involved in AI development. Nvidia, a leader in the GPU market essential for AI operations, experienced an unprecedented 16.86% drop in its stock value, marking the largest single-day loss in Wall Street history.

Other tech giants weren't spared either; Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Alphabet saw their stocks decrease between 2.1% and 4.2%, while Dell Technologies, known for its AI servers, fell by 8.7%.

DeepSeek's R1 model is touted as a cost-effective alternative to western AI solutions like ChatGPT. Built on the open-source DeepSeek-V3, it reportedly requires significantly less computing power and was trained at a fraction of the cost, approximately $6 million. While some dispute these claims, DeepSeek has nonetheless shaken investor confidence in the hefty investments American tech companies are making in AI, evidenced by its rapid rise to the top of the U.S. free app download charts.

Sheldon Fernandez, co-founder of DarwinAI, emphasized DeepSeek's impressive performance, stating to CBC News, "It performs as well as the leading models in Silicon Valley and in some cases, according to their claims, even better. But they did it with a fractional amount of the resources, which is really what is turning heads in our industry." Fernandez noted that DeepSeek's model disrupts the pricing models of western AI platforms, offering advanced features for free and challenging the high valuations of these companies.

Despite the market turmoil, President Trump viewed DeepSeek's emergence positively, suggesting it could benefit the U.S. by reducing costs without compromising on results. He stated, as reported by the BBC, "Instead of spending billions and billions, you'll spend less and you'll come up with hopefully the same solution. If you could do it cheaper, if you could do it for less and get to the same end result, I think that's a good thing for us." Trump remains confident in the U.S.'s continued dominance in AI.

Despite the impact of DeepSeek, Nvidia remains a powerhouse with a valuation of $2.90 trillion. The company is set to launch the highly anticipated RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs this week, with enthusiasts braving the cold to camp outside stores in anticipation.
