Unveiled gifts and Sony's updated policy for PSN on PC

Sony's policy requiring PlayStation Network (PSN) tethering for PC games, even single-player titles, has sparked significant backlash from gamers. This restriction, coupled with regional limitations on service availability, has impacted the accessibility and sales of recent Sony PC releases.

Recently, Sony announced some modifications to this policy. While the company hasn't entirely abandoned PSN tethering for PC games, they've introduced some relaxations.

The following games will not require mandatory PSN tethering:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Players who choose to tether their accounts to PSN will still receive in-game bonuses:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
  • God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest early in the game, and a resource pack.
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.

In November, during an investor call, Sony COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the player opposition to PSN connection requirements. He cited security and order as the justification, referencing service-based games. However, he failed to adequately explain how this applies to single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.

Times have changed, and this policy continues to be a point of contention.
