Unveiled: Top Games to Elevate Nintendo Switch

by Joseph Feb 13,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike other consoles with abundant ports, the Switch's selection is more curated. This list highlights ten standout titles – four GBA and six DS – showcasing the best of what's available beyond the Nintendo Switch Online app.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with a solid shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version offers a compelling alternative. A worthwhile comparison, and a potentially more accessible experience for some. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, often appealing even to non-shooter fans.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title initiates an excellent series, though its initial entry shows some early development quirks. These rough edges are smoothed out in later installments, but the first game serves as the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature, justified by the distinct gameplay differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original provides ample enjoyment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, solidifying Shantae's presence across generations. Its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon and might warrant future inclusion on this list.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not localized then), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, although later installments also deserve recognition.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating experience that deserves wider recognition.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without a DS.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow shines due to improved button controls over the original touch controls. However, all three games in the collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, this adaptation works well. Each game is a standalone RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
