No New Weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds Due to Innovation Challenges
The challenge of crafting new weapon types for the Monster Hunter franchise. This article delves into the complexities of weapon balancing and reveals details about the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration.
Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Weigh In on a Potential 15th Weapon Type
A New Weapon Remains a Possibility
With over a decade of consistent weapon options, the Monster Hunter series might benefit from a fresh weapon type. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, a selection unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive. While Tokuda expressed interest in adding a new weapon, he explained the challenges: "It’s not off the table, but we haven't prioritized it for recent titles."
The difficulty lies in creating a weapon that doesn't overlap excessively with existing ones. Tokuda elaborated, "We refine existing weapons, introducing new concepts, relationships, combos, and moves in each installment. The resources required to add a new weapon are often better spent enhancing the existing arsenal."
Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom continues to innovate, adjusting weapons to achieve their vision for MH Wilds with features like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized maintaining the core feel of each weapon: "We avoid drastic changes that alter a weapon's identity."
Weapon balancing is a meticulous process. Tokuda stated, "We have a design concept for each weapon in every title – how the Insect Glaive should feel, how the Great Sword should feel. However, player experience ultimately determines if the concept translates to reality."
Balancing MH Wilds' weapons presented unique challenges. Tokuda explained, "Iceborne added many high-level moves and abilities. Players were assumed to have mastered the basics, so we focused on advanced techniques."
MH Wilds, however, represents a fresh start, with a complete overhaul of weapon mechanics. Tokuda highlighted, "We carefully considered each weapon, ensuring it aligns with the game's overall feel, rather than simply retaining elements from previous titles."
Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds Collaboration Event Phase 2
Monster Hunter Now's collaboration event with MH Wilds enters Phase 2 on February 28, 2025, to celebrate the latter's release. This phase introduces Chatacabra, 12 Hope weapons from MH Wilds, and two new layered armors (Hope armor style and a Seikret mount-themed armor).
MH Now players can earn vouchers for MH Wilds items (Mega Potion, Dust of Life, Energy Drink, Well-done Steak, and Dash Juice) through limited-time quests, redeemable across all MH Wilds platforms.
In an February 18, 2025 Season 5 press briefing, Niantic Senior Producer Sakae Osumi hinted at future collaborations: "This is just the beginning. We plan further collaborations, including more monsters from Wilds."
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
