Xbox Keystone: Leaked Patent Details Scrapped Console's Design
A recently unearthed patent offers a glimpse into the design of the abandoned Xbox Keystone console. While hinted at previously by Phil Spencer, the Keystone's release never materialized.
During the Xbox One era, Microsoft explored various strategies to re-engage lapsed fans. This included the launch of Xbox Game Pass, a service that continues to thrive on the Xbox Series X/S. Prior to Game Pass, Games With Gold provided free games, a service discontinued in 2023 alongside the introduction of Game Pass's tiered subscription model. Following Game Pass's success, Microsoft explored a dedicated cloud-streaming console focused exclusively on Game Pass content. A newly discovered patent reveals this console's intended design and functionality.
Windows Central recently uncovered details of the Xbox Keystone, a device envisioned as a streaming box akin to Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick. The patent includes multiple images depicting the Keystone's design. The top view shows a circular pattern reminiscent of the Xbox Series S. The front features an Xbox power button and a rectangular port, likely a USB connection. The rear panel would have housed an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and an oval-shaped power port. A pairing button for controllers is located on one side, while ventilation slots are present on the back and bottom. A circular base elevates the device for optimal airflow.
Why the Xbox Keystone's Cancellation?
Microsoft has been conducting xCloud testing since 2019, a process likely intended to optimize the Keystone's performance. The projected price point for the Keystone ranged from $99 to $129, but Microsoft was unable to achieve this cost target. This suggests that the technology necessary for streaming Xbox Game Pass games via xCloud exceeded the projected budget. Considering Xbox consoles are often sold at cost or even at a loss, the challenge of producing the Keystone for under $129 becomes clear. However, future technological advancements could potentially make this concept viable.
Given Phil Spencer's past mentions of the Xbox Keystone, the project wasn't entirely clandestine. While Microsoft may have shelved the device for now, the underlying concept could influence future projects.
