Ygwulf's Fate in Avowed: Kill or Spare?
In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, "Untimely End," the Envoy discovers they have been the victim of a tragic assassination. After some clever detective work with Kai and Marius in Paradis, you uncover the identity of your killer: Ygwulf, a member of the Paradisan Rebels who resist Aedyr’s presence in the area. As the Envoy of the emperor, you become a prime target for their cause.
Tracking down Ygwulf leads you to an underground hideout filled with enemies and challenging platforming sections. It's advisable to come prepared with plenty of Health Potions and the best gear available. As you navigate through this dungeon, you may come across documents that shed light on Ygwulf’s true intentions and his remorse. He initially believed the Gods compelled him to kill the Envoy, but later realizes his visions were misguided. Ygwulf expresses regret for his actions and is willing to face justice, whether you find these documents or hear it directly from him during your confrontation.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
If you decide to have Ygwulf turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote, it's considered the worst choice. He will face the brutal Inquisitor Lödwyn, likely resulting in a painful death, and you won't receive as many rewards as you would by sparing him or killing him. Choosing to spare Ygwulf outright will earn you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra as a token of his gratitude. However, even if you show mercy, Ygwulf's fate is sealed, and he will meet his end later in the story.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's fate is inevitably death, opting to kill him during your encounter is the most beneficial choice. Choosing the Attack option in dialogue leads to a boss fight, which serves as excellent practice for future encounters in *Avowed*. Additionally, defeating Ygwulf grants you the best loot among the three options.
Upon defeating Ygwulf, you can loot his body for currency, Adra, and his unique armor set, Blackwing. This armor not only looks impressive but also provides significant stealth advantages, including a +30% Damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% Movement Speed increase when crouching, aiding in sneaking past enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Despite being encountered early in the game, Ygwulf's fate slightly impacts the ending of *Avowed*. After completing the final gameplay section, you'll see art and narration that illustrate the consequences of your decisions on Eora's Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify and bring peace to the Living Lands, Ygwulf's death will always occur, radicalizing the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring they remain a violent resistance against your efforts post-credits.
