Ubisoft has celebrated another milestone for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, announcing that the game has now reached 2 million players since its launch on March 20. This marks a significant increase from the 1 million players it attracted on its first day. Ubisoft highlighted that this achievement has surpassed the initial launches of both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey, emphasizing the game's strong start. In their social media post, Ubisoft expressed gratitude to the community, saying, "Thank you for joining the journey in Feudal Japan!"

While Ubisoft has not yet disclosed specific sales figures for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the game has become the top-selling title on Steam. This marks Ubisoft's return to the platform after years of PC exclusivity on the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has achieved a peak concurrent player count of 58,894 on Steam, securing a spot in the top 30 most-played games on Valve’s platform. This peak is anticipated to increase over the opening weekend, potentially positioning Shadows as the most-played game on Steam by the end of it.

For context, Assassin’s Creed Origins reached a peak of 41,551 players on Steam over seven years ago, while Odyssey hit 62,069. Meanwhile, BioWare’s single-player RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which launched on Steam on October 31, 2024, saw a peak of 89,418 players. It's important to note that the true concurrent player peak for Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be higher, considering its availability on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, platforms where player data is not publicly shared by Sony or Microsoft.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows faces significant global expectations following multiple delays and the disappointing sales of last year’s Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft has faced a series of challenges including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release. The situation became so dire that the Guillemot family, Ubisoft's founders and largest shareholders, are reportedly in discussions with Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout to retain control.

The game has not been without its controversies, particularly in Japan. This week, IGN confirmed that Ubisoft released a day-one patch for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, addressing concerns from some Japanese politicians regarding the depiction of in-game temples and shrines. In a notable incident, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada brought up the issue during an official government meeting, prompting a response from Japan's Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba.
