by Elijah Jun 04,2025

Following the release of Patch 8, Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a substantial increase in player numbers on Steam, positioning developer Larian Studios for a successful transition as they prepare for their upcoming projects. This highly anticipated patch introduced 12 new subclasses, sparking immense interest among players who eagerly embraced the new content alongside the fresh photo mode feature.

Over the weekend, Baldur’s Gate 3 reached a peak concurrent player count of 169,267 on Steam, an impressive milestone for a narrative-driven RPG in its second year. While exact player statistics for PlayStation and Xbox remain undisclosed, the buzz surrounding this title continues to grow.

In response to the patch’s success, Larian CEO Swen Vincke expressed optimism regarding the game's sustained popularity, attributing this to both the recent updates and thriving modding community. He emphasized that this momentum provides the team with the necessary space to concentrate fully on their next ambitious endeavor, acknowledging the high bar they must meet.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Vincke highlighted the critical acclaim and commercial triumph of Baldur’s Gate 3 since its launch in 2023, noting its consistent sales performance across 2024 and into 2025. Recently, Larian announced a media embargo to direct efforts toward a secretive new project, leaving behind their beloved D&D roots.

Meanwhile, D&D rights holder Hasbro remains enthusiastic about the franchise. At the Game Developers Conference, SVP of Digital Games Dan Ayoub hinted at forthcoming developments, though he refrained from detailing whether these involve a sequel or alternative ventures such as crossovers. Despite the delay, Ayoub confirmed a long-term vision for Baldur’s Gate 4, emphasizing a cautious yet innovative approach to ensure quality.
