Frostpunk 1886 Announced: Ground-Up Remake Coming in 2027

11 Bit Studios Announces Frostpunk Remake Powered by Unreal Engine 5

Polish developer 11 bit studios has revealed Frostpunk 1886, a complete remake of their acclaimed 2018 survival city-builder, scheduled for release in 2027. This announcement comes just months after the launch of Frostpunk 2, marking nearly a decade since the original's debut.

The studio is rebuilding their icy apocalypse masterpiece from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, moving away from their proprietary Liquid Engine that powered both the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine.

Returning to the Frozen Roots

Frostpunk 1886 isn't just a visual upgrade - the developers promise expanded mechanics, additional laws, and crucially, an entirely new Purpose path that will offer fresh challenges even for veteran players. The title references the pivotal year when the Great Storm descended upon New London in Frostpunk's alternate history.

IGN awarded the original Frostpunk an impressive 9/10 in their review, praising its unique blend of strategy and survival elements. While Frostpunk 2 received a slightly lower 8/10 score, reviewers noted its ambitious expansion of political and social complexity.

Dual Development Paths

11 bit studios assures fans they remain committed to Frostpunk 2's ongoing development, with DLC planned alongside preparations for the console launch. The studio envisions both games evolving simultaneously as parallel experiences within the same frozen universe.

A key addition coming with the remake is full mod support - a frequently requested feature that was technically unfeasible with the original engine. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 positions Frostpunk 1886 as an expandable platform capable of supporting future content updates.

As the team wraps up development on their upcoming title The Alters (due June 2024), frostbitten survivors worldwide can begin counting down the days until they return to New London's frozen streets in 2027.
