MultiVersus Fans Applaud Season 5 Updates as #SaveMultiVersus Trends Amid Server Closure

by Sarah May 08,2025

MultiVersus, the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, is set to close its doors when Season 5 concludes in May. Despite the looming shutdown, a recent update has injected new life into the game, sparking a surge in player engagement and even igniting a #SaveMultiVersus movement across social media platforms.

The community eagerly anticipated the launch of the fifth and final season on February 4 at 9 am PT, following Developer Player First Games' announcement of the game's closure. The update not only introduced DC's Aquaman and Looney Toons' Lola Bunny as the last playable characters but also brought significant changes to the game's combat mechanics. The increased speed and responsiveness have been a long-requested feature, transforming what was expected to be a melancholy farewell into a revitalized gaming experience.

Players quickly noticed the enhanced combat speed after Player First released a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter. This update marks a significant departure from the slower, criticized gameplay during the MultiVersus beta test in 2022 and is even quicker than the version seen when the game relaunched in May last year.

The Season 5 update patch notes detail that the boost in combat speed results from reduced hitpause across most attacks, enabling faster combo chaining. Specific characters like Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others have received additional speed enhancements, particularly in aerial attacks, allowing for faster falls. Garnet's adjustments balance her ground and air ringout potential, refining her role as a swift character.

Season 5 has transformed MultiVersus into a nearly unrecognizable game, offering far more than just new characters. However, with the shutdown scheduled for May 30, the game's future is bleak. Warner Bros. Games plans to remove MultiVersus from digital storefronts and disable online play, leaving only offline modes available.

Fans are reeling from the irony of the game achieving its full potential just as it faces termination. X user @PJiggles_ described MultiVersus as "the most interesting bad game in existence," reflecting on its tumultuous journey. Professional player Jason Zimmerman (Mew2King) questioned the timing of the movement speed increase, lamenting its absence during the game's relaunch.

On Reddit, users like @Desperate_Method4032 praised the Season 5 update for resolving numerous issues, including improved shield animations, which have significantly enhanced the game's polish. Despite the shutdown announcement, there remains a glimmer of hope among fans for a potential reversal, driven by the game's newfound potential.

Despite fan hopes, Player First and Warner Bros. remain steadfast in their decision to end service this summer. MultiVersus game director Tony Huynh shared his closing thoughts on X, addressing lingering player concerns. Real-money transactions were disabled as of January 31, and the Season 5 premium battle pass was made free for all players as a final gesture.

MultiVersus will officially cease operations at 9 am PT on May 30. While Warner Bros. moves forward with its shutdown plans, the community finds solace in sharing memes and celebrating the game's final, improved moments.
