The Fall Guy director is in discussions to helm Netflix’s Gears of War film.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that David Leitch, known for Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and Bullet Train (2022), is negotiating to direct Gears of War, adapting Microsoft’s dynamic third-person action game.

Leitch and Kelly McCormick are set to produce with The Coalition, the game’s developer. Jon Spaihts (Dune) is reportedly crafting the screenplay.

Two and a half years after Netflix secured Gears of War rights, progress is evident. An adult animated series is also reportedly in development, set to follow the film. Success could lead to further Gears projects.

Who will portray protagonist Marcus Fenix remains a key question. Actor and wrestler Dave Bautista has strongly expressed his desire to take on the role, backed by Gears co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.

Video game adaptations are thriving, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie, and Sonic films setting box office records. Other successes include the Uncharted and Mortal Kombat films, alongside Resident Evil adaptations.

In March, Microsoft gaming head Phil Spencer said the Halo TV series’ struggles didn’t deter further adaptations. Lessons from Halo and Fallout have bolstered Microsoft’s confidence in this space.

“We’re growing through this process, gaining confidence to do more,” Spencer stated.

“Halo and Fallout taught us valuable lessons. While some projects may falter, we’re committed to expanding this work for the Xbox community,” he added.

In gaming, The Coalition is developing Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel without a confirmed release date.
