Owlcat Games Unveils Ambitious Sci-Fi RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn
Owlcat Games has revealed their latest project: The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a narrative-focused action RPG set within the universe of the beloved sci-fi television series. This marks a bold departure from their signature isometric RPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader.
Shifting to an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn embraces modern action RPG elements including cover-based combat, customizable class abilities, party management, and companion relationships. The development team promises appearances from familiar TV show characters with original actors potentially reprising their roles.
Players will experience the game as a Pinkwater Security operative trapped during Eros Station's deadly lockdown, eventually taking command of a spacecraft and leading a crew through a solar system-wide adventure.
"This represents the sci-fi action RPG we've always wanted to create," explained creative director Alexander Mishulin. "The Expanse's grounded, complex universe perfectly suits our vision for mature, choice-driven storytelling where decisions carry real weight."
Game design producer Yuliya Chernenko acknowledged the Mass Effect trilogy's influence: "That series defined a generation of gamers. We're evolving that model with hard sci-fi authenticity, political intrigue, and morally grey storytelling - plus the romantic elements fans expect."
The gameplay integrates signature Mass Effect elements with Owlcat's RPG expertise. Players can create their own captain (choosing between Earth, Mars, or Belt origins), manage crew relationships, and engage in tactical combat with a two-character active squad system.
Franchise enthusiasts will recognize key locations including Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna. The story unfolds parallel to the first two-and-a-half seasons of the show (covering the initial book arcs), maintaining the franchise's signature political tension and human drama.
Currently without a release date, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is confirmed for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Owlcat emphasizes this project has a dedicated development team separate from their Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader DLC work.
