Noir: A High-Quality USB Camera Viewer and HDMI Display App

Turn your mobile device into a portable monitor for cameras, gaming consoles, laptops, PCs, and more! This app requires an HDMI to USB-C dongle (a UVC capture device or video capture card—not a USB-C hub or USB-C to HDMI cable) to function. It also supports cameras, endoscopes, and microscopes with USB streaming capabilities.

Noir leverages UVC video and UAC audio streaming, offering OpenGL ES and Vulkan graphics backends. The free version provides core functionality and an immersive experience (with ads, but not in the preview). Upgrade to the pro version for advanced features and to support ongoing development.

Key Applications:

  1. Camera Monitoring: Pro features include LUTs, histograms, and edge detection.
  2. Primary Gaming Monitor: Pro features include visual effects, brightness/contrast adjustments, app-specific volume control, and FSR 1.0.
  3. Secondary Laptop Monitor: Extend your workspace conveniently.
  4. Broad Compatibility: Works with any device featuring HDMI output or USB streaming.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Device Recognition Issues: Ensure your device supports USB Host (OTG) and that you're using a video capture card, not just a hub or cable. Insufficient power may require a powered USB hub.

  2. Laggy Preview: Check your USB version (USB 3.0 for USB 3.0 capture cards). For USB 2.0 cards, use MJPEG video format and stay within the 1080p30fps specification (some cards support up to 1080p50fps).

  3. Sudden Connection Failure: Restart your device.

  4. Black Screen (Gaming Consoles): Disable HDCP in your console's settings (Settings -> System -> HDMI). Note: PS3 doesn't support HDCP disabling. Some HDMI splitters can bypass HDCP, but this isn't officially recommended.

  5. Unsupported Aspect Ratios: Most capture cards only support 16:9 and 4:3. Use Noir's stretch feature to adjust, provided your capture card's EDID and output resolution support it.
