Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hits 3 Million Players, No Sales Data Released by Ubisoft
Ubisoft has proudly announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has attracted over 3 million players within just seven days of its launch on May 20. This impressive figure marks a significant increase from the 2 million players reported just two days after the game's release, surpassing the launch numbers of both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
According to Ubisoft's recent statistics, which were initially disclosed through an internal email and covered by IGN, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has performed exceptionally well compared to Origins and Odyssey. Although it didn't replicate the "perfect storm" success of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla from 2020, Shadows achieved the second highest day one sales revenue in the franchise's history, only trailing behind Valhalla. Additionally, it holds the record for the biggest Ubisoft day one sales on the PlayStation Store and has accumulated over 40 million hours of gameplay so far.
The launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes at a critical time for Ubisoft, following a series of delays and the disappointing sales of last year's Star Wars Outlaws. The company has faced numerous challenges, including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release. The situation became so dire that the founding Guillemot family reportedly considered a buyout deal with Chinese mega-corp Tencent and other investors to retain control of Ubisoft's intellectual property. As a result, the gaming industry is closely monitoring Assassin’s Creed Shadows' early performance to gauge its success or failure.
On Steam, Assassin’s Creed Shadows set a new record for the franchise over the weekend, reaching a peak of 64,825 concurrent players. This is notable as it was the first Assassin’s Creed game to launch on Steam since Odyssey in 2018. However, it's worth comparing these numbers to other recent triple-A single-player games like BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which peaked at 89,418 players on the platform.

It's challenging to determine whether Assassin’s Creed Shadows is meeting, exceeding, or falling short of Ubisoft's expectations without specific revenue or sales figures. Ultimately, the financial performance of Shadows will be crucial not only for the game itself but for Ubisoft's future. We'll likely have a clearer picture when Ubisoft releases its next financial report in the coming months.
