Larian Studios Celebrates Baldur's Gate 3 Anniversary with Player Stats Reveal

To mark Baldur's Gate 3's first anniversary, Larian Studios unveiled a fascinating collection of player statistics, offering a glimpse into player choices and gameplay styles. The data, shared on X (formerly Twitter), reveals everything from romantic entanglements to hilarious mishaps and epic achievements.

Romance and Relationships in the Forgotten Realms

Romance played a significant role for many players. A staggering 75 million companion kisses were recorded, with Shadowheart leading the pack at 27 million. Astarion followed closely behind with 15 million, while Minthara received a respectable 169,937. Act 1's celebratory night saw 32.5% of players with Shadowheart, 13.5% with Karlach, and 15.6% choosing solitude. By Act 3, Shadowheart's popularity soared to 48.8% for her final romance scene, compared to 17.6% with Karlach and 12.9% with Lae'zel.

More adventurous players explored intimate encounters with Halsin (658,000 players, 70% in human form, 30% bear form) and the Emperor (1.1 million players, 63% Dream Guardian, 37% mind flayer).

Whimsical Adventures and Unexpected Encounters

Beyond romance, players engaged in plenty of quirky activities. A remarkable 1.9 million players transformed themselves into cheese wheels! Friendly dinosaurs received visits from 3.5 million players, while 2 million freed Us from the Colony. Even the Dark Urge, known for their dark nature, showed a surprising softer side, with 3,777 players finding a way to spare Alfira.

Animal companions were also popular. Scratch the dog received over 120 million pets, while the Owlbear Cub garnered over 41 million. A curious 141,600 players attempted to pet His Majesty, the cat – the same number who conquered Honour Mode.

Character Creation and Class/Race Preferences

A significant 93% of players created custom avatars, highlighting the game's robust character customization. Among pre-made characters, Astarion was the most popular (1.21 million players), followed by Gale (1.20 million) and Shadowheart (0.86 million). Interestingly, 15% of custom characters were based on the Dark Urge.

The Paladin class reigned supreme (nearly 10 million players), followed closely by Sorcerer and Fighter (over 7.5 million each). Other classes had solid representation, though none reached the 7.5 million mark.

Elves were the most popular race (over 12.5 million), followed by Half-Elves and Humans (12.5 million each). Tieflings, Drow, and Dragonborn also had significant numbers.

Specific class/race combinations emerged, with Dwarves favoring Paladins (20%), Dragonborn leaning towards Sorcerers, and Halflings choosing Bards and Rogues.

Epic Achievements and Game Endings

141,660 players conquered Honour Mode, a testament to their skill. Conversely, 1,223,305 playthroughs ended in defeat, with 76% of those players deleting their saves and 24% continuing in custom mode.

Major narrative choices also shaped the experience. 1.8 million players betrayed the Emperor, while 329,000 convinced Orpheus to remain a mind flayer. 3.3 million players killed the Netherbrain, with 200,000 involving Gale's sacrifice. In a rare occurrence, 34 players saw Avatar Lae'zel self-sacrifice after rejection.
