The former CEO of Sony Europe revealed a key strategic move that solidified the PlayStation 2's dominance: securing exclusive rights to Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto franchise. This decision, directly influenced by the impending launch of Microsoft's Xbox, proved incredibly lucrative for Sony.
A Calculated Risk that Paid Off
Chris Deering, former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, explained in a GamesIndustry.biz interview that the looming Xbox launch in 2001 spurred Sony to proactively secure exclusive deals with key third-party developers and publishers. This preemptive strategy aimed to prevent Microsoft from poaching titles and bolstering the Xbox's nascent game library. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, accepted Sony's offer, resulting in GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas becoming PS2 exclusives for a period of two years.
Deering admitted initial uncertainty about the success of GTA III, given the shift from the top-down perspective of previous titles. However, the gamble paid off handsomely, significantly contributing to the PS2's record-breaking sales and solidifying its place as the best-selling console in history. The deal also benefited Rockstar, who received favorable royalty terms.
Rockstar's 3D Revolution and the PS2
Grand Theft Auto III's groundbreaking 3D environment marked a pivotal moment in gaming history. Rockstar co-founder, Jaime King, confirmed in a 2021 GamesIndustry.biz interview that the transition to 3D was a long-held ambition, contingent upon technological advancements. The PS2 provided the necessary capabilities, allowing Rockstar to realize their vision of an immersive, sprawling open world.
