Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer

by Camila Apr 16,2025

Despite the underwhelming reception of the TV adaptation of Halo, Microsoft remains undeterred in its quest to bring more of its iconic video game franchises to the screen. According to Phil Spencer, Microsoft's gaming chief, fans should brace themselves for more adaptations in the future.

In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer shared insights ahead of the much-anticipated release of "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation of the beloved Microsoft-owned game Minecraft, starring Jack Black. The film is poised for success, and a strong performance could pave the way for sequels, further solidifying Microsoft's foothold in the entertainment industry.

Microsoft's journey into adapting its video games for the screen includes the highly acclaimed Fallout series on Prime Video, which is already gearing up for its second season. However, the Halo TV series, despite its significant investment, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception.

Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from its experiences with Halo and Fallout, gaining valuable insights and confidence in the process. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," he stated. He acknowledged that not every adaptation will be a hit but assured the Xbox community that more projects are on the horizon.

Looking ahead, speculation abounds about which Xbox game might be next in line for adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on Gears of War, though progress has been quiet, with only occasional updates from MCU star Dave Bautista expressing interest in playing Marcus Fenix.

As we ponder future adaptations, could Prime Video, buoyed by the success of Fallout, consider an Elder Scrolls or Skyrim series? Amazon's current fantasy lineup with The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time might suggest otherwise, but the possibilities are intriguing.

Sony's success with the Gran Turismo movie has set a precedent. Could Microsoft follow suit with a Forza Horizon film? With Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, opportunities for a Call of Duty movie or a renewed effort with Warcraft are on the table. Journalist Jason Schreier's book, "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," disclosed that Activision Blizzard had been developing series with Netflix for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo, projects that could potentially be revived under Microsoft's wing.

On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of Crash Bandicoot could lead to a family-friendly animated movie or series, capitalizing on the success seen with Mario and Sonic adaptations. Additionally, with Fable set for a reboot in 2026, an adaptation seems like a natural next step.

Could Microsoft attempt another adaptation of Halo, this time as a big-budget movie? The question lingers as fans eagerly await announcements.

Microsoft's rivals, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in their adaptation journeys. Sony has enjoyed success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and even Twisted Metal, which is set for a second season. Sony has also announced adaptations for Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima, with the God of War TV show already confirmed for two seasons.

Nintendo, on the other hand, boasts the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and is currently working on a sequel alongside a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.
