Colossus' Shadow Film Receives Fresh Details

Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti recently offered an update on the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While the project's development has spanned over a decade, Muschietti assures fans it's not dead. Sony Pictures initially announced the project in 2009, with game director Fumito Ueda involved. Josh Trank was initially attached but withdrew due to scheduling conflicts.

The announcement comes alongside other Sony game adaptations revealed at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.

Muschietti, known for It and The Flash, clarified on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso that the film's delay stems from factors beyond creative control, specifically the complexities of adapting such a popular and visually ambitious IP. He cited ongoing discussions regarding the film's budget and confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions.

The Shadow of the Colossus game's impact is undeniable, influencing titles like Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2. Muschietti, while not a hardcore gamer, calls the game a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times. Ueda, the game's creator and founder of GenDesign, recently unveiled a new sci-fi game at The Game Awards 2024, hinting at a continuation of the evocative atmosphere of the original Shadow of the Colossus. Despite the 2018 PS4 remake, the live-action adaptation aims to introduce this classic to a wider audience while satisfying existing fans.
