Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nearing Completion, but Release Still Distant

Deltarune Chapter 4 Progress

Undertale creator Toby Fox recently shared a development update on Deltarune in his latest newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a release date for Chapters 3 and 4 (slated for simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4) remains elusive.

Fox confirmed that Chapter 4 is largely playable, needing only polish. Maps are finished, battles are functional, but some fine-tuning is required: minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing, visual enhancements, background additions, and refined ending sequences for a couple of battles. Despite this, three friends have played through the entire chapter with positive feedback.

The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially considering this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox emphasizes the need for meticulous quality assurance to ensure a polished product.

Prior to release, the team must complete several crucial tasks: testing new features, finalizing PC and console versions, Japanese localization, and thorough bug testing.

Chapter 3 development is finished (per Fox's February newsletter). Interestingly, early work on Chapter 5 has already begun, with map drafting and bullet pattern design underway.

While no firm release date was given, the newsletter offered a glimpse of Ralsei and Rouxls' dialogue, an Elnina character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. The extended wait since Chapter 2 has generated both anticipation and some initial disappointment, but Fox assures fans that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will surpass the length of Chapters 1 and 2.

Fox remains optimistic, suggesting future chapter releases will be more streamlined once Chapters 3 and 4 launch.
