FBC: Firebreak - The Unexpected Control Multiplayer FPS Hit
When Remedy Entertainment, renowned for crafting compelling single-player narratives in third-person games, announced their foray into multiplayer with *FBC: Firebreak*, skepticism was understandable. Yet, after witnessing a hands-off demo of this three-player PvE first-person shooter set six years post-*Control*, it's clear that Remedy has crafted something refreshingly original. *Firebreak* distinguishes itself in the crowded multiplayer shooter landscape with its unique, quirky charm, steering clear of the typical military or sci-fi themes. Game director Mike Kayatta emphasized the game's design philosophy, stating, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." This approach promises a gaming experience that's enjoyable without demanding a massive time commitment.
In *FBC: Firebreak*, players take on the role of volunteer first responders within The Oldest House, equipped with an array of bizarre weaponry. Whether you're a secretary or a ranger, your mission is to tackle crises as they arise. The game offers flexible play sessions, allowing you to dive in for 20 minutes or a few hours. Perks and character combinations ensure each playthrough remains fresh and engaging. Your goal? To manage various "Jobs" and navigate through zones separated by containment doors, all while keeping the Hiss at bay.

When you start a session, you select a "Job" (mission), a "Crisis Kit" (your loadout), and set the "Threat Level" (difficulty) and "Clearance Level," which dictates the number of zones you'll explore. One of the Jobs showcased, "Paper Chase," takes place in an ordinary office section of the FBC building, where you and your team must combat the spreading Hiss. The challenge lies in escaping with valuable currencies for upgrades and new gear, balancing exploration with the urgency to return safely to HQ.
*FBC: Firebreak* sets itself apart with its quirky arsenal. From a hand-cranked snowball launcher that can extinguish fires and douse sticky-note monsters to a zapper that can summon lightning storms, the game's weapons have a distinct homemade charm. Even traditional firearms like machine guns and shotguns find unique uses, such as combating the menacing sticky-note monsters that threaten to overrun the brutalist building.
Beyond its inventive weaponry, *FBC: Firebreak* introduces engaging gameplay mechanics deeply rooted in the game's universe. From office supply shelves that replenish ammo to makeshift turrets and stereo speakers that ward off the Hiss, the game encourages creativity and strategy. Unlockable Perks add further depth, allowing for unique gameplay experiences, like bullets returning to your clip upon missing or extinguishing yourself by jumping. Duplicating Perks can enhance their effects or share them with teammates, fostering cooperative play.
Notably, *FBC: Firebreak* accommodates solo play and duo sessions, broadening its appeal. Remedy aims for a lower minimum PC spec but also supports advanced technologies like DLSS4, multi-frame generation, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. The game is Steam Deck verified and will launch on Xbox and PC Game Pass, as well as PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. While post-launch content plans remain under wraps, the game will include paid cosmetics as its only form of microtransactions.

While I haven't yet played *FBC: Firebreak*, the initial impressions are promising. It's evident that this isn't just another multiplayer shooter; it's a thoughtful, engaging experience that harks back to a time when games didn't demand endless hours of commitment. With its unique blend of creativity and accessibility, *FBC: Firebreak* is poised to be a standout title in the gaming world.
