Top Avowed Companions Ranked by Utility
In Avowed, Companions not only enrich the narrative with their dialogue and interactions but also play crucial roles in gameplay mechanics, from opening new pathways to enhancing combat effectiveness. Here's a comprehensive ranking of every Avowed Companion from least to most beneficial, based on their practical contributions to your adventure through the Living Lands.
- Marius
In my experience with Avowed, Marius (depicted on the right in the image above) didn't quite align with my preferred play style. His utility shines early on, particularly in exploration, where he aids in discovering items and plants. However, his combat prowess quickly wanes as more versatile companions become available. Here's a breakdown of Marius' abilities and their upgrades:
- Blinding Roots: Immobilizes enemies for 8 seconds, upgradable to stun, affect multiple enemies, and inflict Bleed Accumulation.
- Heart Seeker: A piercing shot that guarantees a hit, upgradable to target multiple enemies, increase damage against foes below 50% health, and reduce cooldown.
- Shadow Step: Marius vanishes and reappears to strike enemies up to three times, upgradable to instantly kill stunned enemies, deal increased damage to low-health foes, and affect up to six enemies.
- Wounding Shots: Inflicts Bleed Accumulation on enemies, upgradable to reduce their damage resistance, slow them, and further diminish their damage output.
While Marius' abilities are effective at controlling and weakening enemies, they cater to a niche that may not appeal to all players, especially those not focusing on melee combat.
- Giatta
Giatta, the support-focused Animancer, brings a different kind of utility to the table. Her magical abilities are geared towards healing, shielding, and enhancing the party's performance, making her invaluable in challenging encounters like boss fights. Here are Giatta's abilities in Avowed:
- Purification: Heals allies by 25% of their max health, upgradable to heal up to 50%, interrupt and knock back enemies, and boost allies' damage reduction.
- Barrier: Provides temporary health to allies for 20 seconds, upgradable to increase temporary health, heal enemies upon barrier expiration, and protect Giatta from melee hits.
- Acceleration: Boosts allies' movement and attack speed for 15 seconds, upgradable to reduce damage taken, extend duration, and decrease ability cooldowns.
- Reconstruction: Heals allies slightly with attacks, upgradable to prioritize healing for those below 20% health, grant temporary health at max health, and revive incapacitated allies upon killing an enemy.
Giatta's ability to power Essence Generators also opens up new areas for exploration, particularly in the late game. Her support capabilities make her a great match for Envoys with Wizard builds.
- Kai
As the first Companion you meet in Avowed, Kai remains a valuable asset throughout your journey. Known for his tank-like resilience and straightforward damage-dealing capabilities, Kai requires minimal management from the player. Here are his abilities and upgrades:
- Fire and Ire: Stuns and taunts a single enemy with his Blunderbuss, upgradable to ignite targets, increase stun, and reduce cooldown.
- Unbending Defense: Regenerates health and reduces damage taken by 25%, upgradable to further reduce incoming damage, boost health regeneration, and unleash a damaging shockwave.
- Leap of Daring: Stuns and taunts nearby enemies upon landing, upgradable to expand its area of effect, grant temporary health per hit enemy, and increase attack damage per hit.
- Second Wind: Revives Kai by restoring 50% of his max health, upgradable to increase health restoration, boost attack speed temporarily, and reset all ability cooldowns.
Kai's versatility in handling both single targets and crowds, coupled with his self-revival ability, makes him an essential combat partner.
- Yatzli
Yatzli, the fiery Wizard, stands out with her potent offensive capabilities and excellent crowd control. As the last Companion you recruit in Avowed, her impact is immediate and significant. Here are her abilities and upgrades:
- Essence Explosion: Releases essence and explosive damage upon hitting an enemy, upgradable to expand the blast radius, inflict fire accumulation, and reduce cooldown.
- Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Fires a barrage of arcane missiles that seek enemies, upgradable to increase fire rate and range, and inflict shock accumulation.
- Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows an enemy for 10 seconds, upgradable to enhance slowing effects, create an area of effect, and inflict frost accumulation.
- Blast: Causes Yatzli's attacks to burst in a small area of effect, upgradable to deal explosive damage capable of breaking blocks and walls, and increase chances of inflicting status effects like Frozen, Ignited, or Shocked.
Yatzli's powerful abilities and her capacity to clear obstacles make her an indispensable ally for navigating the Living Lands and overcoming its challenges.
Avowed is set to launch on PC and Xbox on February 18, promising players an immersive journey with these compelling Companions by their side.
