Former BioShock and Borderlands Developers Announce Chaotic New Game

Summary

  • Stray Kite Studios announces Wartorn, a real-time strategy roguelite.
  • Featuring destructible environments, difficult moral choices, and a painterly art style, Wartorn is slated for a Spring 2025 Early Access release on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Wartorn, the debut original title from Stray Kite Studios, a team of industry veterans with credits on major franchises like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, is set to launch on PC in Spring 2025. Founded in 2025, the Dallas-based studio boasts approximately 30 employees and previously developed the standalone Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure and numerous Creative maps for Fortnite.

Wartorn blends real-time strategy and roguelite mechanics, following two elven sisters on a perilous quest to reunite with their family. Their journey will be filled with challenging battles and morally ambiguous choices.

Wartorn Is Chaotic in More Than One Way

Wartorn's fantasy world is deeply fractured and chaotic, presenting constant challenges for the player. This chaos extends to the game's physics-driven environmental destruction system, ensuring unique and unpredictable encounters in each playthrough. The game's core theme explores the search for purpose amidst this chaos. "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us," says Stray Kite Studios co-founder and creative director, Paul Hellquist.

Wartorn Will Require Players To Make Tough Decisions

Between battles, players face difficult choices, such as deciding who to save or feed, shaping the narrative and ensuring replayability. Combat offers similar freedom, with a dynamic magic system allowing players to combine fire, water, and lightning elements for diverse strategic applications, such as shocking enemies in water or igniting tar-covered foes.

Wartorn's roguelite progression system allows players to carry upgrades between runs, making each attempt easier. The game's painterly art style enhances the dramatic setting, while a slow-motion feature provides precise control during hectic moments. Launching in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025, Wartorn promises a unique and challenging experience.
