Dynasty Warriors: Origins Dev Team Was Instructed to “Go Kill The Player”
Dynasty Warriors: Origins delivers a significantly more challenging combat experience, thanks to producer Tomohiko Sho's directive to the development team: "Go and kill the player." This article delves into the design choices behind the game's increased difficulty and other notable changes.
A Deadlier Battlefield: "Go and Kill the Player"
The enhanced enemy AI in Dynasty Warriors: Origins creates a heightened sense of realism, reflecting the brutal realities of warfare. In an interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sho explained that the instruction to make enemies far more aggressive was intended to immerse players in a more authentic battle experience, where both player and enemy alike face genuine peril.
While raising the difficulty, Sho emphasized the importance of balanced challenge. The game aims to provide rewarding obstacles, fostering a sense of accomplishment even for players less experienced with action games. He acknowledged the difficulty of balancing the series' signature "musou" exhilaration with the increased realism of a more challenging battlefield.
A Return to Roots: "Origins"
A key departure from tradition is the absence of a sequential number in the title. Instead of Dynasty Warriors 10, the game is titled Dynasty Warriors: Origins, marking the first unnumbered entry in the franchise.
This "Origins" designation highlights the game's focus on the first half of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, covering events up to the pivotal Battle of Chibi (Battle of Red Cliffs). In a Tokyo Game Show 2024 interview with TheGamer, Sho explained this focused narrative approach, emphasizing a commitment to a more thorough and intense portrayal of this crucial historical period.
Arriving seven years after the last main installment, Dynasty Warriors: Origins introduces an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, navigating the power struggles of Han Dynasty China. Based on the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the game blends historical events with fictional elements.
Released on January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
