Halo Infinite Design Head\'s Studio Halts Its First Game Project

by Evelyn Feb 17,2025

Jar of Sparks, the NetEase-backed studio founded by former Halo Infinite design head Jerry Hook, has paused development on its debut game project. The studio is actively seeking a new publishing partner to help realize its creative vision.

Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to establish Jar of Sparks, described the initial project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." While details remain scarce, the decision to halt development and search for a new publisher suggests challenges encountered during the project's lifecycle.

NetEase, a prominent global video game company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and Marvel Rivals. The latter recently launched its Season 1 Battle Pass and is preparing for the addition of the Fantastic Four in January 2025. NetEase's involvement with Jar of Sparks marks another instance of a veteran game developer partnering with the Chinese tech giant, following the establishment of GPTRACK50 Studios by former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi in 2022.

Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause and the studio's intention to assist its team members in finding new opportunities. While layoffs weren't explicitly mentioned, the statement implies a restructuring of the studio's operations following the closure of its first project.

The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, with 343 Industries rebranding to Halo Studios and shifting to Unreal Engine for future titles. Whether this restructuring will revitalize the franchise remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Jar of Sparks' future hinges on securing a new publishing partner and charting a new course for its ambitious project.
