eSports Welcomes Newest Addition: Chess
Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Moment at EWC 2025
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament is making headlines with an unexpected addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, marking a significant milestone in the world of competitive gaming. Let's delve into the reasons behind this exciting development.
Chess Takes Center Stage at EWC 2025
A groundbreaking partnership between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has brought competitive chess to the world's largest gaming and esports festival. This collaboration aims to introduce the classic strategy game to a wider, more mainstream audience.
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, describing chess as "the mother of all strategy games." He highlighted the game's rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene as perfect attributes for the EWC.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader demographic. He emphasized the opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future generations of players.
Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown
The EWC 2025 event, scheduled for July 31st to August 3rd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, boasts a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must first compete in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will vie for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the inaugural esports chess competition.
To enhance appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will feature a modified format. Instead of the traditional 90-minute time control, matches will utilize a 10-minute, no-increment system. Tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.
From Ancient Origins to Global Esports Phenomenon
With roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, chess has endured through centuries, evolving into a beloved pastime. Its transition to the digital realm, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, broadened its accessibility, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by streaming platforms, influencers, and shows like "The Queen's Gambit."
Now, with its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and global engagement.
